Profile

Principle of South (POS) is an organisation of musicians, music and video producers, audio engineers, djs, vjs and event organisers based in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The organisations activities include event creation and management, musical production for television and radio, a digital music and video production school, workshops for schools and music retailers, web and graphic design services and equipment hire.

Formed in 2008 by Yustoni Volunteero (founding member and president of social arts group Taring Padi) and Latex (long time Yogyakartan DJ, VJ and event organiser) POS has developed a steady reputation for its independent events. Through the purchase of a sound system and all the equipment necessary to facilitate events POS is able to produce alternative and unique programs that offer opportunities to musicians, producers, djs and vjs operating outside of the mainstream Indonesian music scene.

A primary focus of POS is to expose the Indonesian public to music and culture outside of everyday experience. Such a focus has resulted in the support and facilitation of performances by international artists such as Filistine, Lucas Abela, Joel Stern, Sally Fielding and Samu.

POS also has close ties with many similar communities operating throughout Indonesia such as Sakit Kuning Kollective, Sound Boutique, House of Natural Fiber, Java Bass, YesNoWave Records, Buzy Bump and Jogja Hip Hop Foundation. Involvement with such organisations means that POS is able to facilitate events throughout Indonesia by working collaboratively.

In addition to events POS also has a solid reputation for its educational services. POS’s education center has all the facilities and experienced tutors for individuals wishing to learn digital music and video production, audio engineering, djing and vjing. Through its teaching POS places a strong focus on individuality, insisting that students find there own style and way of producing rather than following mainstream trends. POS’s education programs also involve workshops for high schools and institutions as well as regular sessions demonstrating digital production techniques for music retailers. By providing educational services POS also benefits from an ever increasing pool of artists and technicians it can draw upon for its activities.

Major events to date have included SoundClash 1/2/3 (in collaboration with DubYouth Sound System), Taring Padi’s 10th birthday celebration, Invading Bitrate 2/3 and Burn Your Idols (in collaboration with YesNoWave Records), Electro Wet NYE 08/09 (in collaboration with IDClubber), ongoing events for Radio Prambos and MC2 Distro.
